John (Jack) Smasal of St. Paul was the "Emperor" of the "Emperors of Jazz" Dixieland bands that performed on cruise boats sailing the St. Croix River near Stillwater. Smasal, who played the washboard and drums and would manage up to four groups playing on Andiamo riverboat cruises, died on Thursday in St. Paul.
